Motivation Monday: Be a Beginner

I am challenging myself to post every Monday in January for a little series I’m calling “Motivation Monday.” It will be an article focused on a self-help topic that has helped me and is something I want to expand on.

“Embarrassment is the cost of entry. If you aren’t willing to look like a foolish beginner, you will never be a graceful master.”

Is there any hobby or skill you always really wanted to learn? Or thought you would learn at some point in the future? For me there have always been a few things I assumed I would eventually learn to do, but never put effort into. One of the things that holds us back is from the embarrassment of having to learn something, and possibly failing.

The hardest part about starting something, a hobby, a job, a project, is not knowing what you’re doing. This is especially true if it’s something public.

To learn something new, especially if it has to be learnt publicly, takes a lot of humility. We often compare ourselves to others who are older or have more experience in that area. When we do this comparison, it not only hinders our progress and confidence, but it also undervalues the years of work that others more advanced have put into perfecting their craft. It really shows that you have a high view of yourself, of your ability to do something completely foreign despite having never done it before, and also a low view of the time, dedication, and effort that it takes.

If there’s something you’ve always wanted to do, something realistically, you have to realize that you won’t just wake up one day and be able to do that thing. It will not be given or handed, it will take time and honest work.

In an age where we strive for instant gratification, understand that there are things, great things, that take a lot of time. Because they take time, does not mean they aren’t worth doing. Quite the opposite.

I have an article that explains a little more about this linked here. What skill or hobby would you like to learn?
