With fall approaching, I thought I’d share my approach to timeless seasonal decor. I tend to avoid clunky, obvious decor that screams “Hobby Lobby threw up here.” Home store have become oversaturated with cheaply made fall decor, it’s hard to tell what’s worth buying. Here’s a few tips on classy seasonal styling.
Practice Smart Consumerism
At the beginning of the season, look through the decor you have in storage, make a note of what you need and keep an eye out for sales. Having a list prevents impulse buys. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve fell in love with a decor piece, bought it, then realized it doesn’t fit with any of my decor, or I don’t have a place to put it.
Store displays are specifically designed to be visually appealing. When strolling through the aisles of HomeGoods and Target, it can be easy to pile a cart full of ghosts, pumpkins, and random signage. Move the item you’re interested in to another aisle away from the display. You may find that once it’s away from the curated display, you’re less likely to go through with the purchase.
From there, cross reference your list. Think about if it matches the decor you already have. Is it a trend, or can you see it being used five years in the future? What is the material it’s made of?
Identify what qualities are important to you. Understand that while trends can be fun, but you don’t need to feel a pressure to participate in every single one.
This year’s trends of wool or knit pumpkins are cute, when well-placed they make fabulous additions.
Avoid Clutter
Easier said than done, right? Holiday decor can sometimes limit the functionality of your space. For those with limited space, it’s very important to avoid clutter and keep clean lines. The best way to curb clutter is to replace everyday decor with holiday decor, don’t add it.
It’s important to mention that for fall especially, the cozy autumn look can be achieved with minimal additions to your home decor so don’t feel pressure to go out and buy something you wouldn’t otherwise desire.

Decorate for the Season, not the Holiday
Everyone has different tastes of course, but I find decorating for the season gives a cozy, warm feel whereas decorating for a holiday can be overtly blunt and obvious.
However, I find nature inspired decor fares much better than the years trend. Making beautiful tablescapes and displays from branches, seasonal florals, arrays of gourds, feathers, all create a feel of autumn without being overtly obvious.
Seasonal decor should be show, not tell. You don’t need a turkey “gobble till you wobble” sign to give a feel of thanksgiving. Incorporate nature-inspired elements into your decor and tablescapes.
These are just a few tips I’ve picked up in my own styling journey. Everyone has their own style, and every style can be beautiful in its own way! What fall trends have caught your eye?
